Escape Lounge FLL review: it’s nice, but perhaps not the escape you’re hoping for

Don’t let the name fool you. Despite its tempting name, the Escape Lounge at the Fort Lauderdale Airport isn’t exactly the escape you may be thinking it’s going to be.

Sure, it’s a beautifully designed lounge with pretty good (but limited) food. However – it doesn’t offer much of an escape from all of the chaos out in the main terminal. It’s a busy place.

Location

You’ll find of the Escape Lounge in Terminal 3 at FLL. It’s located in the corridor on the walkway to Concourse E, just beyond the security checkpoint. Honestly? The corridor it’s located in is more of an escape than the lounge is. Just sayin’.

The main entrance. Even if you’re only slightly familiar with the Fort Lauderdale Airport, I’m willing to bet you’ll agree with me that, yeah, this kinda looks like an escape. FLL is a mofo!

It’s easy to miss if you’re not paying attention though. It was actually the cupcake that caught my eye – not the sign.

How to get in

Escape lounges are fully independent (not partnered with any particular airline). They have partnered up with American Express though – which is good news for Amex cardholders such as myself.

There are basically two ways to get in:

  1. Pay the entrance fee (which, at the time of this writing, seems to be $65). You can even make a reservation online to avoid the possibility of having to wait in line.
  2. Flash your American Express Platinum Card (or your American Express Delta Sky Miles Reserve Card) for complementary access.

Layout

The Fort Lauderdale Escape Lounge is one of the largest Escape lounges that I’ve seen yet (easily triple the size of the Escape Lounge in Terminal 3 at PHX). It’s essentially one large room broken up into different sections with very stylish dividers.

Inside of the Amex Escape Lounge FLL
Wait a sec. I thought they said this was going to be an escape. It’s just as crowded in here as it is out there!

Just like everything else at the Fort Lauderdale Airport, the vibe is busy and chaotic. There are people everywhere, and it’ll probably be difficult to find a place to sit.

They actually did a pretty good job of breaking up the space into different sections. Not so crowded over here.
Different seating types inside of the Amex Escape Lounge FLL
Each “room” has it’s own seating type. This must be the orange room.

I found the green room!

Despite the crowds, I consider this to be one of the nicest airport lounges that I’ve visited recently. It’s extremely well designed, with many different types of seating options.

Windows and natural light Amex Escape Lounge FLL
I like the fact that there are large windows in this lounge (with decent views of the airplanes outside). It seems like an afterthought though, because there are very few seats with a proper view of the action.

Believe it or not, I found the quietest spot to be the communal table near the main entrance. Go figure.

Amex Escape Lounge FLL electrical outlets and USB power ports
There are electrical outlets and USB ports everywhere in this lounge. I didn’t test them all (sorry!), but the ones here at the communal table were free of cookie crumbs and seemed to do the job just fine.

Food and drinks

Food and drinks are usually pretty good in Escape lounges. The one here in Fort Lauderdale offered the usual assortment of hot and cold food items along with a fully staffed bar. Neither were large (or extensive).

Both the bar and the self-serve food area are located together over yonder. Good luck getting to it without getting poked in the eye when it’s really busy in here (which is like, always).

Here’s a picture from the other direction. The food is on the left, and the bar is on the right.
Full service bar in the Amex Escape Lounge FLL
The selection of alcohol looks pretty good IMHO. I have no proof of this unfortunately, because I had an itch for orange juice that needed to be scratched.
Amex Escape Lounge FLL hot food
The food is plentiful, but fairly basic.
Hot food items available in the Amex Escape Lounge FLL
Apparently I arrived on “Mediterranean” day. Not that I’m complaining or anything. That chicken and vegetable stuff was good!
Amex Escape Lounge FLL sandwiches and chips
I didn’t try the sandwiches, but I may have overindulged on the tortilla chips. Maybe.
Self serve food bar in the Amex Escape Lounge FLL
This isn’t the largest spread of food I’ve ever seen in an airport lounge, but it’s typical compared to other Amex Escape Lounges that I’ve eaten too many tortilla chips been in.
Amex Escape Lounge FLL desserts and sweets
For dessert? Cookies. Three kinds!
My plate of food in the Amex Escape Lounge FLL
Maybe this is Mexican and not Mediterranean? I don’t know. But it was good, and it paired most excellently with the tortilla chips.

I may not know sh*t about food, but I know a good airport lounge when I see it.

Pros and cons

In my opinion, primary benefit this lounge is the free food (and drinks). It’s not a very good place to relax, but there’s always something good on the menu.

Pros

  • Hot food! Not only that, they did a pretty good job of making sure there was always some available. As soon as a tray was empty, it was replaced immediately.
  • It’s a beautiful lounge. Extremely well designed.
  • The staffed bar looked like a pretty good place to get a stiff drink.

Cons

  • *Grinch Impression* noise noise NOISE!
  • Finding a place to sit is likely to be difficult.
  • If you do end up finding a place to sit, it’s sure as heck not going to be private.
