Escape Lounge West Palm Beach

Escape Lounge West Palm Beach review (TLDR: their definition of ‘escape’ is kinda iffy)

I’ve visited a lot of poorly named airport lounges over the years, but the Escape Lounge at the West Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) is maybe the worst of them all.

Since when is a tiny overcrowded lounge with limited seating options considered to be an ‘escape’?

I guess if they’re claiming it to be an escape from the wide open space of the main terminal, they’re not wrong.

Location

The PBI Escape Lounge is located in Concourse B. You’ll see it immediately after clearing the security checkpoint, which is nice because it means you won’t have to walk very far to reach it.

The main entrance. Enjoy this quiet serenity while you can, because it’s easily the least headache-inducing picture in this entire review.
Escape Lounge West Palm Beach reception desk
A receptionist-less reception desk. Either the chaos of this lounge finally got to her (and she’s lying dead on the floor), or she ran off to take a dump. Either way, this isn’t the welcome I was expecting.

How to get in

Escape lounges are fully independent and not partnered with any particular airline. They have partnered up with American Express though, which is good news for Amex cardholders such as myself.

There are basically two ways to get in:

  1. Flash your American Express Platinum Card (or your American Express Delta Sky Miles Reserve Card) for complementary access.
  2. Pay the entrance fee (which, at the time of this writing, is $65). You can even make a reservation online to avoid the possibility of having to wait in line.

Layout

Unlike the large (and multi room) Escape Lounge at the Fort Lauderdale Airport, the one here in West Palm Beach is tiny. Like, teeny tiny.

Escape Lounge West Palm Beach layout
Ta-daaa! This looks fun, doesn’t it?

The entire floor plan consists of one room. The bar is located on the far end, with the self serve food buffet island located directly parallel to it.

Escape Lounge West Palm Beach self-service food bar
I do see food, so that’s a good sign. I may have to throw a few elbows to reach it, but if that’s what I gotta do, that’s what I gotta do.

The view looking back towards the main entrance (as I contemplate my escape from what I thought was going to be an escape from the main terminal).
Escape Lounge West Palm Beach bathrooms
Seems to me that the only legitimate “escape” in this lounge is to loiter around the bathrooms. Not much action over there.

Seating options in this lounge are limited. It’s an extremely dense layout, which means that you will find zero peace and quiet (and privacy) in here. Prepare to rub elbows with complete strangers for the entire duration of your visit.

It’s also worth noting that there are no showers in this lounge. It’s just not that kind of place.

I see an empty seat! I see an empty seat! Spotting the Loch Ness Monster would be less lucky than this methinks.

Food and drinks

The only saving grace of this lounge is the decent selection of food available. The menu is simple, consisting of one or two hot entrees with a variety of cold pasta salads. Sandwiches and desserts are also available – much like how it was in the Phoenix Escape Lounge

Escape Lounge West Palm Beach food buffet
It’s not all doom and gloom. That’s a nicely sized food buffet if I’m being honest. And the fact that the bar takes up the entirety of the far wall behind it is the icing on the cake.
Escape Lounge West Palm Beach hot food
Much obliged for the hot(ish) food! This garlic herb chicken and rice was pretty good actually.
Escape Lounge West Palm Beach pastor, sandwiches, and charcuterie board
Pasta salads, sandwiches, and charcuterie board things. RIP to a select few of those most easily-accessible cheese and meat cubes. “Into my belly with you!”
Escape Lounge West Palm Beach desserts
The pastry and dessert selection is a little weak, but that’s OK. The existence of meat and cheese cubes was enough to keep this grumpy airport lounge reviewer happy and distracted.
Escape Lounge West Palm Beach breakfast cereal
I so want to meet the man (or woman) who chooses Froot Loops over cheese cubes in an airport lounge. I am nearly 100% convinced that this weirdo person does not exist.
Escape Lounge West Palm Beach drink station
This is the beverage station (which came in clutch as I was trying to find something to wash down the cheese cubes with).
Escape Lounge West Palm Beach nonalcoholic drinks
There’s no self-serve alcohol in this lounge unfortunately. If you want any hootch, it’s going to require moseying on over to the bar.
My lunch at the Escape Lounge West Palm Beach
And you thought I was kidding about the cheese cubes. Cubed cheese and meat FTMFW.

Not gonna lie though, all that talk about a Froot Loops earlier sparked craving in me I haven’t had since I was nine years old. Shoulda coulda woulda.

Pros and cons

The West Palm Beach International Airport is pretty nice, so making the effort to squeeze into this wee little Escape Lounge it isn’t worth it in my opinion. Not even for the food. It’s just too claustrophobic to fully enjoy the benefits of IMHO.

Pros

  • The food is pretty good. It’s hardly amazing, but there’s lots of it.
  • I really liked the large windows and the way they let in a lot of natural light.
  • The location is excellent (right at the entrance of Concourse B).

Cons

  • It’s probably the smallest and most crowded airport lounge that I’ve ever visited.
  • Being crowded means being noisy. It’s not exactly a tranquil environment.
  • There is no self serve alcohol. Getting a stiff drink at the bar will require interacting with a real human being.
